But while the book is dark, it also is hilarious and then it has this wonderfully satirical nature about it. Krasnov noted that in Asian societies, it is the collective that takes precedence over the individual, and for this reason argued that Russia was an Asian as opposed to a European nation. The Russia of Day of the Oprichnik seems to be in the Chinese sphere of influence, and it is hinted that it is the leaders in Beijing who dictate to the leaders in Moscow as it stated that all of the weapons used by the Russian Army are made in China. Since the turn of the century he’s been a sometime counsellor to Putin as well as a figure of fascination to people in the West like Alex Jones.

Sorokin is also the author of the screenplays for the movies Moscow, The Kopeck, and 4, and of the libretto for Leonid Desyatnikov’s Rosenthal’s Children, the first new opera to be commissioned by the Bolshoi Theater since the 1970s. While, clearly, we cannot (I hope) agree, Putin and his associates may well see Komiaga as echoing their position and see this as a worthy tribute to them. Tu se malo masiraju, malo bivaju mlaćeni nekakvim metlicama, a onda se i drogiraju (nepostojećim drogama). The oprichnina get to enjoy such privileges as riding in a Mercedes that has a dog's head tied to the bumpers, and living in a terem taken from an " enemy of the people". Much of the style of the book is a satire of the Socialist Realist style as Komyaga has to perform a quest of sorts to uphold the power of the state and annihilate his own identity over the course of a 24-hour period. At one point there's a giant homosexual-penetration scene where they become a caterpillar of penetration. Vladmir Sorokin, the controversial author of The Day of the Oprichnik whose novels were flushed down a paper-mache pseudo-toilet at a rally by the Putin Youth as "unRussian".

If so, Sorokin deserves credit for bothering to skewer such a marginal figure, because his vision has played out with brutal consistency in the meantime. The siloviki tend engage in gross corruption while mouthing ultra-patriotic language that they all merely serving the state, and that what is good for the Russian state is always good for Russia. Dodaću još maestralnu poslednju scenu: određenim danima u nedelji, predveče, opričnici se okupljaju i odlaze u neku vrstu saune.

Over the course of one day, Andrei Komiaga will bear witness to—and participate in—brutal executions; extravagant parties; meetings with ballerinas, soothsayers, and even the czarina.

Sorokin's heroes tend to be humanist intellectuals who have to struggle against both corrupt, petty and mean-spirited bureaucrats who are temperamentally opposed to any change and the apathy, ignorance and philistinism of the Russian masses. It is a very full day – Russia and the Tsar have a lot of enemies who need to be punished and Komiaga certainly does his bit. The tricky thing here is that on the one hand, Sorokin seems to work with many, many references to classic Russian literature that, let's not kid ourselves, I miss.South Park: его тоже никто не запрещает, потому что это равносильно признанию и лишь подтвердит актуальность контента, чего допустить никак нельзя.

Sorokin is regarded as one of the greatest living Russian novelists and his Ice Trilogy looks excellent. His works have been translated into thirty languages and won many prizes, including the Andrei Bely Prize and the Maxim Gorky Prize. The narrator, the fourth most powerful oprichnik in His Majesty’s elite cadre, recounts the luxurious morning he spends attended by an army of servants in his grand house confiscated from a murdered merchant. The title is a reference to the Oprichnina, the black-clad secret police of Ivan the Terrible, whose symbol was a black dog's head (to sniff out treason) and a broom (to sweep away all traitors). The Tsar, whom Komiaga always refers to as "His Majesty", appears as a shining hologram dispensing vapid and asinine remarks, which Komiaga insists represent the most profound and deep wisdom as he states with great conviction: "His Majesty sees everything, hears everything. kao ni nazivi dela koje Gospodar zabranjuje ili odobrava, njihovih autora, naziva radio stanica, marki cigareta i sl.
